Without the right kind of protection and contingency, companies are vulnerable to DDoS attacks that could harm their business. – Reuters file pic, January 28, 2015.Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks cost companies thousands of dollars in losses, which also impacts the balance sheet and a company's reputation, an IT security firm said today.Kaspersky DDoS protection head Eugene Vigovsky said a DDoS attack on a company’s online resources could cause average losses of between US$52,000 (RM188,177) and US$444,000 (RM1.6 million)The amount of the losses depended on the size of the company but the expense incurred had a serious impact on the balance sheet and company's reputation.DDoS is a type of attack where multiple compromised systems, which are usually infected with a Trojan virus, are used to target a single website in order to "paralyse the website", especially those with high online activity, such as banking websites, sportsbetting websites and online shopping sites.In a statement, Vigovsky said a successful DDoS attack can damage critical business services, leading to serious consequences for the company."For example, the recent attacks on Scandinavian banks (in particular, on the Finnish OP Pohjola Group) caused a few days of disruption to online services and also interrupted the processing of bank card transactions, a frequent problem in cases like this."That is why companies today must consider DDoS protection as an integral part of their overall IT security policy."It is just as important as protecting against malware, targeted attacks, data leak and the like," Vigovsky said.He gave figures as examples, saying the total costs to the company reflected several problems.According to a study by Kaspersky Lab, 61% of DDoS victims lost temporary access to critical business information.Other figures included 38% of companies reporting they were unable to carry out their core business, while 33% of respondents reported the loss of business opportunities and contracts.In addition, in 29% of DDoS incidents a successful attack had a negative impact on the company’s credit rating while in 26% of cases it prompted an increase in insurance premiums."The experts included the costs of remediating the consequences of an incident when calculating the average sum."For example, 65% of companies consulted with IT security specialists, 49% of firms paid to modify their IT infrastructure, 46% of victims had to turn to their lawyers and 41% turned to risk managers."Vigovsky also pointed out that these were the most common expenses incurred.Furthermore, information about DDoS attacks and subsequent disruption to the business often becomes public.Recently, Malaysia Airlines was targeted by international hacker group Lizard Squad, which posted screengrabs of bookings made by various people, including that of a Cabinet minister.The screengrabs were posted after the national carrier denied that its website had been compromised.The group posted the photo of bookings made with MAS on the Lizard Squad Twitter account @LizardMafia which included a booking made by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed from Subang (Selangor) to Kota Baru (Kelantan).MAS had earlier issued a statement insisting its website was secure after a message posted by an entity claiming to be from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) militant group appeared on the flag carrier's website front page.Mocking the statement by the embattled national carrier, the group posted: "[MEDIA STATEMENT]: We would like to point out that @MAS is lying about user data not being compromised. Refer to earlier imgur link."@MAS Are you really that clueless? Wait until we package this nice present for you," it also said after posting a link to the photo with the bookings with "lolol" (which means laughing out loud).After news of the hacking broke, the group scoffed at MAS and posted on its account, "Write Lizard Squad on your forehead, thanks. @MAS"The Lizard Squad is a group of hackers that has caused havoc in the online world before, taking credit for attacks that took down the Sony PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live network last month.MAS later said the incident was not hacking, rather, users were redirected to a hacker website when they keyed in www.malaysiaairlines.com, due to a compromise on its Domain Name System (DNS) which translates a domain name to the Internet Protocol (IP) address.Hundreds of Malaysia Airlines passengers complained it was difficult to access details of bookings due to the compromised DNS. – January 28, 2015.

Redelineation exercise must be fair to all, says Sabah politician

A Sabah politician has reminded the Election Commission (EC) that any redelineation of electoral boundaries for Malaysia must not favour any political parties.Datuk Seri Wilfred M. Bumburing (pic) referred to the polls body's redelineation proposal for Sarawak, which sparked accusations of gerrymandering.He said similar exercise for the rest of country must adhere to the provisions in the Federal Constitution, especially in the drawing up of more seats."The electoral boundaries must not be engineered in way as to favour a particular party to win more seats than the other parties in any general election."It would seem very illogical in the eyes of the international community to see a minority group of community winning more seats than the majority, because, regardless of whatever political philosophy a particular party upholds, the voting pattern is still along racial lines," said the Angkatan Perubahan Sabah president in a statement today.While agreeing that the delineation of electoral boundaries was needed since the last one took place in 2003, Bumburing said the EC need to meet with all stakeholders to obtain feedback before presenting the proposed exercise to Parliament.Any redelineation has to be in accordance to the 13th Schedule of the Federal Constitution.The exercise to redraw electoral boundaries is supposed to be carried out once every eight years to cater to development and the increase in the number of voters.The boundary redelineation process was supposed to start late last year for the entire country but floods that ravaged the northeastern states of the peninsula disrupted the plan, forcing the EC to postpone it to this year at a date that has yet to be determined.Once the exercise starts, the EC will have to complete it within two years before the final report on the recommendations for redelineation is submitted to the prime minister, and then tabled in Parliament for approval and finally, presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for endorsement.Despite allegations of manipulation of electoral boundaries and unfair distribution of voters by the EC, electoral reform group Bersih 2.0 believed that redelineation was needed but had said it has to be conducted in a transparent manner according to the Federal Constitution.The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections said that if redelineation was not carried out, past irregularities or distortions would persist and might worsen over time, causing elected representatives serving growing number of electorates to be overburdened.Election analyst and Bersih member Dr Wong Chin Huat had said without redelineation, problems related to gerrymandering (manipulation of electoral boundaries) and malapportionment (unequally sized constituencies) would remain.Already, opposition politicians and civil society groups had cried foul over EC's proposal to redraw electoral boundaries in Sarawak and raise the number of seats by 11, claiming that the exercise had caused inequalities in the sizes of constituencies.Besides the new seats, the EC has also recommended a change of name for one parliamentary and four state constituencies.The proposal to increase seats is believed to be made now due to the impending state elections, which must be held by April next year.There is also speculation that a snap polls in the Borneo state could be held this year.Critics fear that the ruling Barisan Nasional government would use the exercise as a tool to redraw boundaries or increase the number of seats in its favour.However, the EC had said redelineation was needed to balance out parliamentary areas to ensure they did not burden the MPs.It had previously said it was looking at increasing federal seats by about 15% to 20% in its redelineation exercise, with new seats carved out in Selangor, Johor, Perak, Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu.Malaysia practises a first-past-the-post system in elections where the winner takes all and forms the government of the day by having the most number of seats in Parliament, notwithstanding its share of the popular vote. – January 28, 2015.

PAS akan bertindak terhadap anggota parti itu yang terlibat dengan Persatuan Ummah Sejahtera Malaysia (PasMa) jika terdapat aduan salah laku terhadap mereka.

“Kalau ada laporan barulah kita boleh bertindak.

“Kita harus meneliti bentuk kesalahan yang telah dibuat, barulah keputusan boleh dibuat. Kita mahu memelihara konsep keadilan kepada ahli,” kata Naib Presiden PAS, Salahuddin Ayub.


Pengerusi jawatankuasa pengurusan krisis PAS itu bagaimanapun tidak pasti sama ada terdapat laporan dibuat setakat ini kerana ia dihantar langsung kepada pejabat agung PAS.

“Tanya setiausaha agung (Datuk Mustafa Ali),” katanya ketika ditanya diminta mengulas konflik berpanjangan PAS dan PasMa.

Terbaru, Presiden PAS Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang mengkritik keras PasMa yang disifatkannya sebagai “menebuk kapal” sendiri.

Beliau juga meminta anggotanya yang menyertai PasMa keluar daripada PAS jika tidak setuju dengan dasarnya.

NGO yang digerakkan anggota PAS itu bagaimanapun membalasnya dengan membayangkan supaya Hadi berundur kerana didakwa mengetepikan keputusan muktamar untuk memperkukuh Pakatan.

'Tugas saya sudah selesai'

Ketika dihubungi Malaysiakini semalam, Salahuddin bagaimanapun enggan mengulas lanjut isu itu kerana menganggap tugasnya telah selesai.

“Saya tidak boleh komen apa sebab tanggungjawab saya telah selesai, saya telah bertemu dengan mereka (PasMa).

“Keputusannya kekal dengan keputusan Majlis Syura yang menasihati ahli PAS supaya tidak terlibat dengan program yang dianjurkan PasMa.

“Saya dah bentang (laporan) dan tugas saya telah selesai. Itu keputusan yang parti telah buat,” katanya.

Coroner rules police, other inmates to blame for detainee’s death

Lawyer Eric Paulsen (right) talking to media with his clients, Karuna Nithi's mother Katijah Bebee and family members. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Nazir Sufari, January 28, 2015.A coroner today ruled that policemen and inmates were responsible for the death of an unemployed man while he was detained at the Tampin district police headquarters in Negri Sembilan two years ago.Coroner Datuk Jagjit Singh said the cause of death of P.Karuna Nithi was caused by 49 multiple injuries by blunt objects including physical assault, abuse and unlawful acts by persons unknown, inclusive of police officers and other detainees where Karuna Nithi was held.Jagjit, who is a Sessions Court judge in Seremban, said in his verdict that there was failure or omission to provide the necessary medical care and attention required by Karuna Nithi."There was also failure of the police officers to stop other detainees from abusing Karuna Nithi in the police lock-up."This is the second verdict this month where police have been found responsible for the death of detainees in police custody.On January 16, coroner Ahmad Bache held police responsible for the death of lorry driver P.Chandran through their omission to provide him with timely medical assistance.Chandran had been detained at the Dang Wangi police station in Kuala Lumpur on September 6, 2012 and was held for four days before his untimely death.Jagjit said having gone through all the evidence, he was satisfied that the cause of Karuna Nithi's death was due to a combination of unlawful acts and omissions by person or persons unknown."The deceased was a healthy adult with no life threatening diseases when he entered the lock-up but ended up dead three days later with 49 external injuries," he said.He said a custodial death with that number of injuries should have "rung alarm bells from the word go".Jagjit said he rejected the evidence of forensic pathologist Dr Sharifah Safoorah Syed Alwee after extensive examination of the shortcomings in her testimony."She had erroneously found that the cause of death was due to 'fatty change in the liver'. But this cannot be so when the deceased had 49 external injuries," he said.Jagjit said closed circuit television footages from the police station clearly revealed Karuna Nithi was beaten by other inmates and the cops on duty were privy to what happened.He said some policemen had also contributed to the beating, harassment and bullying based on evidence adduced from the CCTV.Jagjit admitted that Karuna Nithi was a difficult detainee, adding "but that was no reason to ill-treat him"."He was repeatedly transferred from one cell to another because he was having hallucinations, raving and ranting," he added.The judge said a policeman also testified that Karuna Nithi’s welfare was neglected because it was thought that he was only pretending to be sick while in the lock-up.Karuna Nithi, 42, was found unconscious inside his cell by a policeman who went to check on him at about 6pm on June 1, 2013.He was rushed to the district hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.Police had detained him at about 5.30pm on May 28 after his wife lodged a report that he had assaulted her following a quarrel at their home at Rumah Rakyat Taman Muhibbah in Gemencheh.Karuna Nithi had also lodged a report earlier in the day admitting he had assaulted his wife because he could not take her verbal abuse.He was taken to the Tampin magistrate’s court the following morning where a four-day remand order was issued.On May 31, he was charged with causing hurt and was allowed a RM4,000 bail but was taken back to the lock-up because his family could not post the amount to secure his release.Police have maintained there was no physical abuse involved in his death although family members alleged there were fresh injuries on his body.Lawyer Eric Paulsen, who appeared for the family of Karuna Nithi, said this was yet another landmark verdict which the authorities must take serious notice of."The judge reiterated a Court of Appeal ruling last year that not a single person should die in a police lock-up. This is also a small victory for human rights," added Eric, who is also executive director for Lawyers for Liberty.He said Dr Sharifah was supposed to "speak for the dead person" but her findings were not justified.Co-counsel Dr Dheeraj Bhar, who was a medical doctor, said the rejection of Dr Sharifah's evidence had to do with her credibility as a professional."I hope the Malaysian Medical Council will look into this in light of what the judge  concluded," he added. – January 28, 2015

Bank Negara must prove that 1Malaysia Development Bhd's (1MDB) funds in the Cayman Islands have been repatriated by disclosing the local bank holding the funds and whether the firm has enough to pay off its RM2 billion debt, PKR said today.PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said the central bank had authority under the Anti-Money Laundering Act to disclose these matters.He added that if the state investment vehicle had indeed repatriated the funds, it should be able to pay the RM2 billion it owed to local banks Maybank and RHB.He told Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz to openly confirm if the RM7 billion in funds had truly been taken out of the Cayman Islands and returned to Malaysia; which local banking institution was holding the money; and whether the company has enough money to pay off its RM2 million debt to Maybank and RHB which it has sought a third extension."If Bank Negara is unable to confirm these, then it only strengthens speculations that the money was never brought back," he said in a statement today.1MDB's group executive director Arul Kanda Kandasamy said the funds, totalled at around RM7 billion, had been taken out of the Cayman Islands and repatriated.Rafizi said if the money had been brought back but the company still needed an extension to pay the loan, it only confirmed that the company was facing a cash-flow problem.He said government bodies supervising the country's financial and banking systems, like Bank Negara, must accept that 1MDB was a company with financial problems and brought high risk to the nation's finances and its financial system."I understand that Zeti may be in a difficult position because 1MDB is backed by (prime minister) Datuk Seri Najib Razak. But the time has come for her to act independently and sternly to safeguard the interest of the people."Bank Negara's job is to ensure the best value for our currency and to safeguard the stability of our financial and banking system, not protect a troubled company like 1MDB," he said.Rafizi also urged Bank Negara to reject 1MDB's extension request because allowing it would give a dangerous signal to the market when the value of the Malaysian currency was spiralling.Considering the high indebtedness of 1MDB and the risk it posed to the stability of the financial and banking system, he said such a move would cause investors to take their money out of Malaysia, and subsequently hurt the ringgit further."If our sovereign rating plunges because of 1MDB, Bank Negara also bears responsibility for not being firm and transparent in dealing with the risk caused to the country's financial and banking system by the company."Since the situation is getting more complex with the latest extension request by 1MDB, I ask Zeti to spend some time with a delegation of Pakatan Rakyat MPs in two weeks' time to hear what we have to say about the company," he said.DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua also took 1MDB to task for requesting a third extension to repay the RM2 billion debt.Pua said 1MDB was "holding Malaysian banks hostage by seeking a third extension for its overdue RM2 billion loan" and urged Putrajaya to conduct an audit of the company's 1MDB finances.He said Putrajaya must audit the fund following its latest request for an extension.Pua also questioned why 1MDB couldn't have used the funds redeemed from the Cayman Islands to repay its loan. – January 28, 2015.

The ministry says not all forms of caning are outlawed. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, January 28, 2015.Parents must be consulted when the new Child Act is being drawn up, a non-governmental organisation told Putrajaya, after uproar over its proposal to outlaw caning of minors.Ikram Malaysia women's wing chief Datin Paduka Che Asmah Ibrahim said the Women, Family and Community Development ministry's plan to enact a new Child Act should take into account Islamic views as well as the Malaysian culture.She added that the parents and the public had to be educated to ensure the welfare of children was protected."Parents need to understand about disciplining and punishing their kids. Discipline means setting a limit on all aspects of life and has to be inculcated among children since young. This is aimed to ensure a harmonious life and not to scare or worse, abuse children," she said in a statement today.Che Asmah said people, especially parents, needed to understand that although caning is mentioned in Islam as a form of punishment, it cannot be used arbitrarily.Citing an example, she said caning should not be administered to minors below 10 years old."Caning children who are not matured in thinking and unable to comprehend the implications of their actions is a form of abuse."Caning should also be the last effort to discipline after all others have failed."She said efforts to increase awareness of children's welfare should be done continuously and stern action has to be imposed on those found neglecting children.Besides that, she said discussions needed to be held with religious agencies, physiology experts and  related NGOs to obtain a comprehensive view on the proposed law.She added that any amendments to the new Child Act should not solely adhere to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Malaysia is a signatory.Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim’s recent statement that caning a child could be an offence under the new Act raised a storm of protests from politicians and NGOs who had pressed for a review of the proposal.

The ministry clarified that it did not mean to outlaw all forms of caning of children and that instead, the proposal would see a more detailed provision on actions, including caning, which cause physical or mental injuries to children."The ministry is studying and scrutinising the proposal so that the legislation will cover all acts against children causing physical and emotional injuries deemed as criminal offences which could be punishable with heftier imprisonment or fines."Besides, the ministry is also considering alternative punishment such as community service or counselling or parenting courses," said the statement issued by the ministry's corporate communications unit on Monday.Meanwhile, Sisters in Islam said the Quran and Sunnah prioritised justice and love among families and prohibited cruelty and use of force."Justifying the use of force in the name of religion gives a negative image to Islam. Malaysia could see more severe floods like in Kelantan, say experts

Meteorology expert Dr Liew Ju Neng told a forum in Kuala Lumpur yesterday that the extraordinary rainfall Kelantan experienced which led to the floods was due to a climate element called Madden-Julian oscillation. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Seth Akmal, January 28, 2015.Malaysia will see more severe floods like those that displaced more than 100,000 people in Kelantan recently due to a combination of global warming, deforestation and a lack of enforcement.This was the conclusion from experts at a forum to discuss the Kelantan floods last night who argued that all three factors turned what is an annual occurrence into a national disaster.Since floods are year-end phenomena, these factors could be present in other parts of the country which will make such disasters even more severe.The extraordinary rainfall that Kelantan experienced in the span of three to four days, said meteorology expert Dr Liew Ju Neng, was due to a tropical climate element called the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO).The MJO originates from the Indian Ocean and passes through Malaysia four times a year, said Liew of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).When it comes in contact with the Northeast monsoon season that hits the peninsula at the end of the year, it will cause more than usual rain, he said at the Forum titled “Kelantan floods: Coincidence or fate?" in Kuala Lumpur last night.The MJO increases the amount of easterly winds which carries more moisture and this leads to the monsoon dumping more rain than usual when it goes through the peninsula.On January 4, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said that during the height of the floods, there were two days where the amount of rain was equivalent to the total Kelantan experienced for a month last year.Liew said although the MJO travels through Malaysia four times a year, extreme storms only happen when they hit other climate phenomena such as the monsoon.“Since the 1970s, MJOs are becoming more active. Due to global warming, MJOs have increased by 40% to 50%. So in the next 30 to 40 years, we will the MJO passing through six times a year."
Rantau Panjang MP Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff said an estimated RM2 billion in damages were sustained due to the floods. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Seth Akmal, January 28, 2015.The increased frequency of MJOs will lead to more extreme storms which can cause floods to be more severe.The massive floods in Johor in 2006 and 2007 which had been caused by extraordinary rainfall, was also due to the MJO said Liew.Last night's forum was organised by youth group Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM), one of the many NGOs who helped collect and deliver aid to flood hit areas in Kelantan.Rantau Panjang MP Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff said it is estimated that the floods caused RM2 billion in damages while 2,500 houses were destroyed in Kelantan alone. Twelve lost their lives.The floods that also hit Perak, Terengganu and Pahang at the end of last year collectively affected 200,000 residents.Both Putrajaya and the Kelantan government have been blamed for not being adequately prepared for relief operations, as seen in how whole communities were cut off for days without food, clothes and the possibility of rescue.Another expert, Sharmila Ariffin of environmental group Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM), explained that another factor which worsened floods was the clear-cutting of forests to build plantations.She said Kelantan was losing its forests at the highest rate in the peninsula.The high rate of deforestation was due to the creation of timber plantations within permanent forest reserves in Kelantan. In 2014 alone, the state had about 162,000 ha of land classified as timber plantations.
Sharmila Ariffin of environmental group Sahabat Alam Malaysia attributed the worsening floods to clear-cutting of forests to build plantations. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Seth Akmal, January 28, 2015.The plantations are in areas where the forest has been clear-cut, all its logs extracted and the undergrowth removed thereby leaving top soil bare.Although Kelantan has the highest growth rate of timber plantations in the peninsula, said Sharmila, the federal government also has a policy of encouraging plantations all over the country.“This is a policy throughout the country. Not just in Kelantan. There is a RM1 billion fund using the public’s money to encourage cutting down of forests to build plantations."The problem with clear-cutting forests, said drainage expert Datuk Fuad Abdul Rahman, is that it exposes top soil which runs off and chokes rivers with sediment.“When you lose top soil and ground vegetation, the land is not able to absorb rain," said Fuad, who is former deputy director-general of the Drainage and Irrigation Department.Heavier than usual rainfall would then swell already shallow rivers, leading them to overflow and cause floods.These conditions were present in the environment surrounding Sungai Kelantan where forests were clear cut and top soil was allowed to flow unchecked into the river, Fuad said.Sungai Kelantan was one of the main rivers which overflowed and flooded the towns surrounding it, such Kuala Krai, Tanah Merah, Pasir Mas and Kota Baru.Fuad said damage to the environment could have been reduced had the local council enforced regulations requiring those clearing the forest to implement an erosion and sediment control plan.“We presented our findings about the damage to the Kelantan government. But the official told us that it was hard for Kelantan to enforce regulations to control erosion and sediment."Just as in the case with the climate phenomenon and deforestation, this lack of enforcement applies not just to Kelantan but across the country.

But too often they do not have the awareness or capacity to enforce. So they push it to the Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS).“But JPS can only act in an advisory capacity," said Fuad.The floods in Kelantan, said the forum’s moderator Badrul Hisham Shahrin, was an opportunity for the country to reflect and become aware of how such a disaster happened and how to prevent it from recurring.The lessons from Kelantan could be applied to the whole country. Putrajaya will be releasing an interim report on investigations into missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 on March 7. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, January 28, 2015.Malaysia's Department of Civil Aviation will release an interim report on the investigation into the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 on March 7, a day before the one-year anniversary of the disappearance, deputy transport minister Aziz Kaprawi said today."It will have details on the technical investigation," Aziz told Reuters.This is to abide by a requirement from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for Malaysia to release an interim report on the anniversary of the incident, said Aziz.The flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing carrying 239 passengers and crew went missing on March 8.The findings of an international investigation team set up in April 2014 will also be included in the report.The international team consists of the US National Transport Safety Board, Britain's Air Accidents Investigations Branch, China's Aircraft Accident Investigation Department, France's Land Transport Accident Investigation Bureau, the Australia Transport Safety Bureau, aircraft manufacturer Boeing and British satellite communications company Inmarsat .The airline's crisis worsened on July 17 when another jet, Flight MH17, was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.Rounding out a bad year for Southeast Asian carriers, an AirAsia flight from Indonesia's second-biggest city of Surabaya to Singapore crashed in December, killing all 162 people on board.  – Reuters, January 28, 2015.

All five were tucked into covers in and around their parents' bed.At a news conference Tuesday, Springville Police Chief J. Scott Finlayson said investigators have concluded their probe and determined the family members died from drug toxicity from either methadone, heroin or a combination of drugs, including those found in cold medicine.Authorities determined the parents committed suicide. The younger two children's deaths were ruled homicides, although Finlayson said there were no signs of a struggle.The manner of death for the 14-year-old, Benson Strack, was undetermined.Police said Benson wrote a goodbye letter, leaving some of his belongings to his best friend. The only other recent writing the family left behind was a notebook containing handwritten to-do lists about feeding the pets and other chores.Finlayson said interviews with people who knew the Stracks indicated the parents were worried about evil in the world and wanted to escape from "impending doom.""There seemed to be a concern about a pending apocalypse that the parents bought into," Finlayson said. "While some friends though that suicide may have been, or could have been, included in their plans, others believed they were going to move somewhere and live off the grid."During their investigation, police found years-old letters between Kristi Strack and Dan Lafferty, who is serving a life sentence after being convicted of committing a double-murder with his brother Ron.Under the Banner of Heaven is about members of an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, told through the true story of the Laffertys' crimes. The two killed their brother's wife and 15-month old daughter.Ron Lafferty is on death row after his conviction in the July 1984 slayings of his sister-in-law, Brenda Lafferty, and her baby in American Fork. He claimed to have had a religious revelation sanctioning the slayings because of the victim's resistance to his beliefs in polygamy.Investigators said Kristi Strack was deeply interested in the case and struck up a friendship with Dan Lafferty."It was almost like he talked to her like one of his children," Lt. David Caron said. She and her husband both became close to him, and he had directed his remains to go to them after his death. They hadn't talked to him since 2008 and investigators do not believe the couple's beliefs came from Dan Lafferty, police Cpl. Greg Turnbow said."He felt really sad they had committed suicide," Caron said.Benjamin Strack's brother Jacob said the final report from investigators wasn't surprising to relatives still mourning the family's deaths.Looking back, the connection to Dan Lafferty was a troubling sign about the couple's mental state, he said.The Stracks' older son and the children's grandmother found the bodies Sept. 27, according to search warrants. The older son was Kristi Strack's child from a previous marriage.Police found cups with liquid inside next to each of the bodies and a child's sand bucket behind a door with traces of the same combination of methadone and cold medication that was found in their systems.Police believe that Benjamin Strack died last because he was the only member of the family who wasn't underneath bed covers.In a recording of the 911 call released Tuesday, family friend Maureen Ledbetter tells the dispatcher about the deaths as grandmother Valerie Sudweeks screams in the background.The methadone used in the deaths was prescribed to Kristi Strack, police said.Court records show Benjamin and Kristi Strack had a history of legal and financial problems and had gone through court-ordered drug treatment several years ago. Tahap kesihatan Mursyidul Am PAS Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, yang dirawat di Unit Rawatan Rapi Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) Kubang Kerian, dilaporkan bertambah baik hari ini dan dijangka pulang ke rumah dalam masa terdekat.

Anaknya Nik Mohamad Abduh berkata bapanya kini berupaya duduk di kerusi roda.

"Pagi ini doktor dan pihak hospital berkunjung ke rumah untuk melihat dan membantu kami menyempurnakan keperluan dan persiapan untuk ayahanda apabila dibenarkan pulang nanti," katanya menerusi catatan terbaharu di laman sosial Facebook beliau hari ini.

Nik Abdul Aziz, 84, dimasukkan ke HUSM pada 19 Jan lepas setelah tahap kesihatannya merosot ketika banjir baru-baru ini, selain menghidap kanser prostat.

Nik Abdul Aziz yang juga Anggota Dewan Undangan Negeri (Adun) Chempaka merupakan menteri besar Kelantan kelima yang memegang jawatan itu dari 1990 hingga 2013.

สิงห์สี่แควย้อนหลัง - ที่ร้านอาหาร ปิง วัง ยม น่าน พร้อมด้วยสาว ๆ แอนนามารี ม่านมุข ดุจดาจ วาดรวีอยู่กันครบ แต่เกิดเหตุระเบิดขึ้นอย่างกระทันหัน ดุจดาว กับม่านมุข เสียชีวิตในที่สุด ทั้งปิง และวังเสียใจมาก ที่ไม่อาจช่วยแฟนสาวได้ ส่วนน่านก็บาดเจ็บสาหัส ทุกคนบอกว่า วาดรวี เสียชีวิตแล้ว แต่น่านไม่เชื่อ ไพลินมาหาเพลิง เพื่อดูใจ เพราะเพลิงกำลังเสียใจ ที่ต้องสูญเสีย ดุจดาว ลูกสาวไป ต้นแอบไปช่วยชีวิต วาดรวีเอาไว้ ต้นขอโทษเพลิง ที่ไม่ทำตามสัญญา ว่าจะไม่ไปพบวาดรดวีอีก แต่เพลิงไม่ว่าอะไร เพราะต้นสามารถ ช่วยชีวิตวาดรวีเอาไว้ได้ ถึงแม้ตอนนี้จะบาดเจ็บสาหัสก็ตาม ไพลิน เปิดศูนย์อัญมณีขึ้นที่ กาญจนบุรี โดยมี พลอยขวัญคอยเคียงข้างให้กำลังใจ พร้อมทั้งเปิดโครงการ Gold River ศูนย์กลางธุรกิจครบวงจร จุดขนถ่ายสินค้าสู่ประเทศในอาเซียนอีกด้วย โดยอยู่ในที่ดินของ พ่อเลี้ยง สิน สองแคว ซึ่งไพลิน กำลังส่งคนไปเจรจา สิน สองแคว ถูกเฉินตามยิง ขณะที่อยู่กับ น้ำ สายธาร ลูกสาวของตนเอง สินหนีมาพบเข้ากับอรัญ และอีธาน ที่ดักรออยู่ เกิดการต่อสู้กัน แต่สินรอดไปได้ อาการของน่านเริ่มดีขึ้น ในขณะที่เป็นหนึ่งกับเนตรนภา เริ่มเข้ามามีบทบาทในองค์กรของเพลิงมากขึ้น เป็นหนึ่งสั่งยุบทีมชาติเจ้าพระยา แล้วจับตัวเพลิงไป ทำให้ปิง วัง ยม น่าน ไม่พอใจมาก แอนนามารี กลับต้อง ทำตามคำสั่ง ตามจับกุมทั้งสี่คน โดยพิสดารมาช่วยสี่หนุ่มไว้ และตั้งรหัสใหม่ว่า สิงห์สี่แคว

กู้ภัยเมืองจันทบุรีร่ำไห้ ออกปฏิบัติหน้าที่ช่วยเหลืออุบัติเหตุรถชนเสาไฟฟ้า พบผู้เสียชีวิตเป็นพ่อตนเอง แม่สาหัส

(24 ม.ค.) ร.ต.ต.ยุทธศิลป์ สิงหาด ร้อยเวรสถานีตำรวจภูธรมะขาม ได้รับแจ้งว่า เกิดอุบัติเหตุรถยนต์กระบะเสียหลักพุ่งชนเสาไฟส่องสว่างข้างทาง บนถนนสายบ้านแตงเม สามแยกวังแซ้ม หมู่ที่ 2 ตำบลวังแซ้ม อำเภอมะขาม จังหวัดจันทบุรี ในที่เกิดเหตุมีผู้เสียชีวิต 1 ราย และบาดเจ็บสาหัส 1 ราย จึงรุดไปที่เกิดเหตุพร้อมด้วยเจ้าหน้าที่อาสาหน่วยกู้ภัยสมาคมสว่างกตัญญูธรรมสถานจันทบุรี

พบรถยนต์กระบะมิตซูบิชิ สีม่วง หมายเลขทะเบียน บบ 1852 จันทบุรี อยู่ในสภาพพุ่งชนอัดก๊อบปี้กับโคนเสาไฟส่องสว่างพังเสียหาย พบศพ นายวิชิต ไชยพงษ์ อายุ 48 ปี เสียชีวิตอยู่บนเบาะที่นั่งคนขับ ส่วนผู้ได้รับบาดเจ็บทราบชื่อคือ นางบรรจง หาผล อายุ 46 ปี เป็นภรรยาของนาย วิชิต ถูกนำตัวส่งโรงพยาบาลมะขาม 

จากการสอบสวน ตำรวจระบุว่า ตรวจสอบจุดเกิดเหตุไม่พบว่ามีคู่กรณี คาดว่าผู้เสียชีวิตขับรถเสียหลักเอง คาดว่าน่าจะหลับในก่อนเสียหลักพุ่งชนกับเสาไฟฟ้าส่องสว่างข้างทางดังกล่าว ซึ่งในเบื้องต้น ทางเจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจจะได้สอบสวนหาสาเหตุที่แท้จริงต่อไป

ขณะเดียวกัน นายวัชรพล ไชยพงษ์ อายุ 24 ปี หนึ่งในทีมเจ้าหน้าที่กู้ภัยสมาคมสว่างกตัญญูธรรมสถาน จันทบุรี ที่มาร่วมให้การช่วยเหลืออุบัติเหตุครั้งนี้ ต้องพบกับความสะเทือนใจ เนื่องจากเป็นลูกชายของนายวิชิต ผู้เสียชีวิต และนางบรรจง ผู้บาดเจ็บ โดยนายวัชรพงษ์ยังคงปฏิบัติหน้าที่กู้ภัย ช่วยนำศพพ่อออกมาจากซากรถ พร้อมหลั่งน้ำตาร่ำไห้ ก้มกราบศพพ่อ ก่อนนำร่างไร้วิญญาณส่งโรงพยาบาล ให้แพทย์ตรวจวินิจฉัยยืนยันการเสียชีวิตต่อไป

Selangor reps stopped from speaking at anti-highway protest

Protesters hold up placards at the anti-Kidex and anti-DASH rally in Petaling Jaya today. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Mukhriz Hazim, January 25, 2015.Tension ran high at a protest against the proposed Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex) and Damansara-Shah Alam Expressway (DASH) in Petaling Jaya today when Selangor state government representatives were not allowed to speak at the event.An argument occurred when the Say No To Kidex (SNTK) protem co-chairman Dr Mohan Mahatheva told off Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua and his group who were about to go on stage to address the 400-over crowd gathered at Dataran Petaling Jaya since 10am.Pua, along with Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo and Subang MP R.Sivarasa, were asked to hold their own forum instead to explain to the residents of Petaling Jaya and Damansara over their "failure" to help stop the projects.In defending their right to speak at the gathering, Pua in a press conference later expressed his regret over what had transpired.“Despite initial agreement to allow us to respond and to allow YB Sivarasa and me to speak, they decided not to let us respond."We regret that as much as there is truth in what they said, there were also half truths and incorrect information," said Pua.He said one of the most commonly exerted "half truth" was the accusation that Pakatan Rakyat elected representatives did absolutely nothing regarding the projects.“Let me also state that at this point of time, there has been no approval given by the state government to Kidex," said Pua.He said the land acquisition caveat, issued during the previous state government under Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had expired and the request to renew the caveat has been denied.Pua added the state government would not approve the Kidex project if it failed to meet with the conditions set by Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali by February 14.“If the conditions are not met, then there will be no highway," said Pua.He said although he appreciated the anti-highway groups' effort in bringing the issues to the state government's attention, there was also "plenty of salt and pepper" being added to discredit the work of PR reps on the matter.“We support their effort... but there were also half truths and lies," said Pua.His remark has apparently angered some of the residents, who were listening to the press conference and demanded him to point out the "lies". Pua responded to this by saying that the "lies" had already been mentioned.Meanwhile, Sivarasa said the Dash issue was more complicated but efforts are being made to address residents' grouses, including possible realignment of the highway at areas deemed too close to their houses.During the protest, both groups (SNTK and Say No To Dash) expressed their frustration over what they described as the failure of the elected representatives from Pakatan Rakyat, training their guns at Azmin for his "silence" on the issue.

They tell me they do not have money."Do not worry about money, I will find money. If we are not brave, how are we going to bring change? Let's bring (Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim), Azmin, (Datuk Seri) Najib (Razak) to court."It does not matter if we win or lose. At least we know more," said Zaid.He added that residents must not allow the state government and Putrajaya to take them as fools.“I am from Kelantan but I have stayed in Petaling Jaya for 44 years. This is a stupid crazy project. It was decided by the Cabinet in 2011 without consulting anybody except those who want to make money," Zaid said.He said the Pakatan Rakyat government had reneged on their promise to disallow construction of tolled highways.“Why is Azmin being so difficult? Don’t take us as fools," said Zaid.Kidex signed a concession agreement on November 15, 2013, and was given a year to fulfil conditions required in order to start work. In November last year, it was granted a three-month extension after failing to achieve several requirements.The 26.1-kilometre highway will start from the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) toll above the Sprint highway at the Damansara interchange and end at the Damansara Puchong Highway (LDP) at Bandar Kinrara Section 2.According to the concession company, Kidex could reduce traffic congestion on the LDP by 25% to 30% and on local roads, in areas like Bandar Utama by 10% to 20%.With 12 interchanges, the RM11.5 billion expressway plans to link drivers to Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong and Sprint highways, which residents claimed are already congested during peak hours.DASH will serve motorists from Puncak Perdana, Alam Suria, Denai Alam, Kampung Melayu Subang, Jalan Sungai Buloh, the Rubber Research Institute Malaysia, Kota Damansara, Damansara Perdana and Mutiara Damansara, Prolintas has said. – January 25, 2015

Malaysian terrorist Marwan reportedly killed in clash with Filipino army

A Malaysian terrorist was reportedly killed when Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters yesterday clashed with Filipino government forces. – Reuters pic, January 26, 2015.Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli Hir or Marwan, who is also Southeast Asia's most wanted, was reportedly killed in a clash between Filipino government forces and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters yesterday, the Philippines Daily Inquirer reported.The report said today that Marwan and another terrorist, Basit Usman might have been killed in the clash near Cotabota, southern Philippines.However, MILF chief for military affairs Von Al Haq said that the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (SAF) commandos encountered and clashed with Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) when the government forces came to serve a warrant for Zulkifli's arrest.“They were also after Basit Usman," Al Haq was quoted as saying.Marwan and Basit were experts in making bombs and active with Indonesia-based Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist group.A police source also confirmed Marwan's death with the Filipino daily, saying the terrorist had been killed with other BIFF members.“They were trapped and may have run out of bullets during the fierce firefight," the source was reported as saying.It said that Marwan had a US$5 million (RM18 million) bounty on his head for his role in several terror attacks which had also put him on the United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) most wanted list.The report said that preliminary details of the clash were sketchy.Military and police officials earlier said that SAF commandos had been been involved in the clash with suspected BIFF terrorists in Mamasapano town, Maguindanao.But an MILF official was quoted as saying later that the SAF commandos had intruded into territory controlled by the MILF’s 105th Base Command, and a clash had ensued.BIFF is an MILF splinter group opposed to peace talks.The report also said that some 30 police commandos had been killed in the fight – the first violence since a peace agreement brokered by Malaysia between the government and MILF.MILF chief negotiator in the peace talks Mohagher Iqbal was reported to have confirmed the clash but neither the group nor the military would indicate who had been killed.“This is the first encounter between the MILF and (government forces) this year. Hopefully, this will be the last," Mohagher was quoted as saying.“The clash was triggered by a no-coordination police operation. They also attacked our position, that’s how our troops were dragged into the encounter."BIFF spokesman Abu Misri Mama told the daily that the clash began after SAF searched the area for Marwan and encountered the MILF’s 105th Base Command.The Army’s 6th Infantry Division public affairs unit chief Captain Joanne Petinglay said the military had been conducting clearing operations in Mamasapano, where the policemen were killed in a clash with BIFF fighters and other outlaws."We are still verifying the casualty figure, what we are doing is we assist the police in extracting the fatalities," Petinglay was quoted as saying. – January 26, 2015.
